A couple’s invitation often serves as a hint for guests as to the type of wedding they can expect on the Big Day. Kate and Chris’s invitation design choice for their Manchester-by-the-Sea nuptials—captured in Carla TenEyck’s photos in a lovely Style Me Pretty feature—was no different. They chose ivory paper, charcoal ink and envelopes with a seafoam green lining to match their wedding colors and an embossed sand dollar to highlight a seaside locale. “Elegant” was an adjective both bride and stationer—Trish Martini, owner of Soiree Andover—used to describe the desired aesthetic, and we have to agree that the finished product is just that.
Tell me how you and your
fiance met, and how did he propose?
My fiance and I met when we were babies at our mother's playgroup. As we grew older he became best friends with my brother. We always hung out over summer vacations and after college we just kept becoming closer and eventually decided we had to be together. He proposed two days before Christmas while we were painting in our new condo that we purchased together.

Tell me about the process
of choosing your wedding invitations—did you have something in mind going into
your 1st appointment and did that change?
I wanted them to be classy and elegant and not like all the trendy obnoxious invitations I had been seeing recently. I got exactly what I wanted and I wasn't swayed by all the other options I saw.

We had ivory invitations with beaded edge and beautiful charcoal font. The custom lining to our envelopes in the color scheme of our wedding really made it all come together cohesively.

Was there anything about
the process of choosing your invitations that you weren't expecting?
The attention to detail and selecting fonts was difficult. Seeing all the examples of styles of invitations was quite overwhelming.

Do you have any advice for
brides-to-be on the invitation process?
When looking at the fonts, start by looking at the first letter of your name and your fiance’s name. It makes it a lot easier to narrow down the ones you love.

Our wedding was at a private beach club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. It was very classic New England, late summer, beachy. We had a huge tent outside filled with lots of big lanterns and a fantastic live band. The colors were seafoam green, soft grey, ivory and light peachy blush. We had our escort cards wedged in antique hydrangeas and our menus had the same seafoam backing that matched the liner of our original invitations.
One of my favorite moments was when my husband surprised me with the best toast. But I was the happiest tearing up the dancefloor all night with all my favorite friends and family in one place!

Tell me about your first meeting with this bride and a little about the process you went through to get to the final decision.
When I first met with Kate, we discussed the
details of her wedding and how she wanted that reflected in her invitation. The
most important part to Kate was to incorporate her wedding color of
seafoam green while keeping an elegant look for her seaside wedding. She loved
the sophisticated look of William Arthur invitations and the idea of adding an
embossed sand dollar and using the seafoam green in the liner. This look was
carried throughout her ceremony and reception pieces including menu cards,
programs, table numbers and escort cards.
What questions do you
always ask at that first meeting with a bride?
We send a questionnaire prior to meeting with the client to get an idea of what they are looking for. We ask about the venue, the colors and the feel that the client wants to create for her guests. This gives us a picture of what the client is hoping to achieve in designing the invitation.

What are some of the big
invitation design trends you're seeing these days?
This year, it seems that there is such a variety of styles requested by our clients. We've seen everything from the traditional bride requesting elegant engraved invitations, the modern bride requesting the simplicity of a sleek pocket design and the glamorous bride requesting beautiful, textured stock for a layered invitation.

When it comes to choosing
wedding invitations, how is today's bride different from those five years ago?
Today's bride has a lot more access to ideas with social media and websites dedicated to wedding design. They are able to create their wedding style using these images as inspiration. It's a great resource for us as well since the client can show us what she's envisioning.

What advice do you have
for brides who are ready to make their first invitation appointment?
Start early! We recommend beginning the process at least four months prior to the wedding, but as in anything...the earlier, the better. There is so much involved in planning a wedding that it is better to cross things off the checklist so that the client gets a chance to enjoy the whole process.
