Ode to the Summer Hostess

O Summer Hostess, Goddess of Hospitality. We praise and thank thee!

For your unfailing graciousness and warmth.
For making us feel so welcome, opening your home to family and friends summer after summer.

You make it look so easy. Yet we know planning a gathering can require
the logistical skills of a field general and the social finesse of a queen.
A toast now to you and all that you do,
simply to create wonderful summer memories for others.

The planning. The lists. The details, details, details.

The house guests back from the beach with their sandy feet.

The gorgeous engagement party you threw to celebrate a new couple’s love.

Those enthusiastic cocktail party guests—
and the overly enthusiastic ones, too.

The bridal showers, baby showers, birthday parties, luncheons and teas.

The beautiful decorations you stayed up until midnight perfecting.

All the astonishing, fabulous food!

The barbeques, the games for the kids, the salads and fresh corn.
The silly hats.

The pool parties: soggy towels, cannonballs, spilled lemonade.
(Wet golden retriever, anyone?)

The hundreds.of.exquisite.little.hors d’oeuvres.

Twinkly white lights in the trees on a balmy midsummer’s evening.

Knowing your shy neighbor will click with your amusing cousin. Uncanny!

The way you make your guests feel like
each is the most important person there.

To all the comfort and pleasure you create for others. To the magic.

You don’t have to go to all that trouble.
But you do, always with generosity and grace.

Your gifts are a gift to those whose lives you touch.

Thank you for your kind hospitality.
