Meet David Evans, designer extraordinaire for our holiday card collections. Here, the Maine resident and devoted surfer shares details about his design process, why you might find him giggling during it and what he looks forward to during the holidays (hint: it isn't the cookies).
Where did you draw inspiration for the personalized & boxed holiday albums?
Oh, I don't know. You just
keep your eyes open and pay attention to what you see; equally important is
paying attention to what you don't see. We, of course follow European and
domestic style trends, see what's happening in retail markets and analyze our
sales history, then take all that information and design to the appropriate
target.
Tell me about your design process.
Well, we start designing holiday
product by choosing categories and determining the number of designs in those
categories. For example, how many Christmas iconic cards? How many secular? How
many corporate? Once that is settled, it's just a matter of filling in the
blanks within the given deadline. Sounds easy, right?
When working on an image, one thing I'm a real stickler for is proportion and
visual structure. No matter how spontaneous a composition looks there is a
geometric organization underneath that holds it together.
I know they're all your children, but do
you secretly have a favorite?
I love the unexpected, the
juxtaposition of unlikely objects. So, I guess "Santa's Beard" is
one. I mean, Genghis Khan, Blackbeard and Karl Marx on the same Christmas card?
Drawing Santa lined up with the Queen's Yeomen was lot of fun also. In fact I
was giggling the whole time.
What goes into choosing your own holiday
card?
Whether the card is
serious or whimsical, the number one thing is the quality of the craftsmanship. We have the best craftsmen in the industry. They're all amazing.
What is your favorite part of the
holidays?
Oh, that's easy: being able
to take some time off and not think
about the holidays for a couple of days!
